1. Basic Organizing 101 Rules

•Don’t try to have any “organizing day.” Instead, pick
a project-focus on a room, a space, a closet, a drawer,
or a container.
•Always Sort first, Purge second, and Organize third
•Never go buy containers until you have done steps one
and two

2. Start Small: Pick 1-2 spaces or rooms.

This will allow you to have some success right from
the start. If you pick a huge project that takes a long
time, you will get frustrated by the lack of progress.

3. Set deadlines and timelines. Know your limits!

•Once you pick your project, set a deadline for when it
will be finished.
•Use a timer to work in increments. When the timer
goes off, take a break or be done!
•Even if you work for 30 minutes a day on something,
it’s progress!
• Done is better than perfect!

4. Enlist help:

•Line up resources before you start.  You will be less
likely to cancel or quit.
•Most donation services take about a week to fit you
in their schedule, so call ahead of time.
•Make sure your friend doesn’t enable you!

5. Create a maintenance plan:
•Have checklist for each room-what needs to get done
every week?
Put away the things you take out to use (teach your
family this too)
•If you don’t have the space or room for something,
don’t buy it!
